Interestingly, the name of the U.S. state of Rhode Island is believed to have been inspired by this island, which speaks to the enduring impact that Rhodes Island has had on history and culture.

Kos Island

Kos, a breathtakingly beautiful island situated in the southeast Aegean Sea, is the third-largest island of the Dodecanese. The island's history dates back to the Neolithic Period, 5th - 4th millennium BC. Interestingly, the name "Kos" has been in continuous use since it was first mentioned in the Iliad and is probably derived from the name Koos, daughter of King Meropas. Moreover, it is the birthplace of Hippocrates, "the father of medicine" -460 - 377 BC- an essential historical fact associated with the island. The island boasts a 14th-century fortress at the entrance of its harbor that was erected in 1315 by the Knights Hospitaller and another from the Byzantine period in Antimachia. These historical sites are worth visiting if you ever plan on exploring the island.

Patmos Island

Patmos is a rocky island in the southeast Aegean Sea and one of the Dodecanese islands. It is widely known as a sacred place, as it is believed to be where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation. The island was designated as the "Holy Island" by the Greek Parliament in 1981, and since 1999, has also been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Many Christian pilgrims visit Patmos yearly to experience its religious significance and learn about its connection to the prophet John and the writing of the Book of Revelation. The island is home to several monasteries and churches, including the Monastery of Saint John, built in the early 11th century. According to Greek mythology, the island's original name was "Letois" because of the goddess Artemis, daughter of Leto. It was believed that Patmos came into existence thanks to her divine intervention. The island's rugged landscape, crystal-clear waters, and rich history make it a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts.

Nisyros Island

Nisyros is a mystical island part of the Dodecanese group of islands. According to Greek mythology, it was born during the great war between Gods and Giants. Legend has it that Poseidon, the God of the Sea, chased the Giant Polyvotis down to Kos, cut a part of the island, and threw it at him in a rage. The rock he threw is now known as Nisyros. The fiery explosions that shaped Nisyros Island make it the youngest volcanic center in Greece, and it is still active to this day, along with the volcanoes of Milos, Santorini, and Methana. Despite its tumultuous origins, Nisyros is one of the most beautiful Aegean islands, still untouched by tourist growth. The island's volcanic activity has formed some of the most unique landscapes, which you can explore by walking in the crater and watching the boiling holes. The latest explosion occurred in 1888, but since then, the island has remained peaceful, and its natural beauty has been preserved for all to enjoy. With its stunning views, rich history, and serene atmosphere, Nisyros is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the magic of the Greek islands.
