DION
Dion is located in the northern foothills of Mount Olympus and very close to the shore of the Thermaic Gulf; it was the most important sacred city of the Macedonians. In the 5th century BC, Archelaos established celebrations dedicated to the Olympian Zeus and the Pierian Mouses, known as Olympia, which was celebrated until about the 2nd century AD. In Dion Alexander, the Great seeks the aid of the Olympian Zeus, father of Gods and humans, before setting out his expedition to the East. In the sanctuary of Zeus, Lysippos's work portrays the famous group of twenty-five Alexander's companions who fell at the Granicus battle. During the Christian period, two basilicas were built on the ruins of the city and one more outside the city walls. The Ostrogoths destroyed Dion in the 3rd century AD, and it has remained in ruins since.
Mount Olympus
Just a few kilometers South of Dion is the village of Litochoro, the base for the walkers of the Mountain Olympus. Mount Olympus refers to the range of mountains about 20 km across. The higher peak of the range is Mytikas at 2917 m. The whole area constitutes the Olympus National Park.
