Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and unique character. The island is home to several picturesque towns and villages, including Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Ierapetra, Malia, Hersonissos, Sitia, and Sfakia. Visitors can explore imposing mountains, stunning beaches, impressive mountainscapes, fertile valleys, and steep gorges. According to Greek mythology, the island was named after the Kourites, the first inhabitants who lived on the top of Mountain Psiloritis. These seven armed giants were half-gods who implemented agriculture and became curators using dance and herbs. The Greeks believed that the Gods invented dance and associated it with their religious and worshipping ceremonies. They thought the gods presented this gift upon only a selection of a few mortals, whom they taught dancing to before introducing it to other humans. The origin of dancing is attributed to Rhea, who introduced this art to the Kourites, who were wandering the Greek world, offering their good services and help wherever needed. According to the myth, Kronos had overthrown his father, Uranus, and because he feared his children might also overthrow him, he ate them as soon as they were born. His wife Rhea, however, deceived Kronos when their last child, Zeus, was born. She hid Zeus in a dark cave in Crete at the top of mountain Psiloritis and gave Kronos a stone wrapped in baby clothes to eat. She also asked the Kourites to dance a war around the cave, shouting and banging their shields with their swords so that Kronos would not hear baby Zeus crying. Later, when Zeus overthrew his father, the Kourites became the priests in the new world. Many years later, Zeus' wife Hera asked them to kill Epaphos, a child that Zeus had with a mortal woman. The Kourites carried out the goddess's wish, but Zeus got very angry, forgot about the protection they had once given him, and killed them with a thunderbolt. Their descendants continued these war dances as part of their religious ceremonies. Crete has many archaeological sites, the most important being the Palace of King Minos in Knossos, the capital of the Minoan civilization. Visitors can also explore the old villages and taste traditional Cretan food. The island boasts some of the best beaches with blue, clear waters and white sand. There are many activities to enjoy, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, and more. Crete has many bars and clubs to choose from and a great nightlife. It is a fantastic place to visit if you want to experience the beauty of the Mediterranean. With its diverse landscapes, hotels, and activities, anything you can imagine you will find here. The fascinating island of Crete offers luxury destinations and activities for any preference.
